10 Years of SimVis

10 years ago, right at the dawn of the new millennium in the year 2000 the SimVis idea was born. Next year SimVis will thus celebrate its 10th anniversary. This is the perfect time to look back at the very interesting and successful history and share some of the highlights with you.

In the year 2000, when the VRVis Research Center in Vienna was founded, the basic research group on interactive visualization was formed, headed by Dr. Helwig Hauser (today Professor at the University of Bergen, Norway). He developed the idea of conducting research in the novel area of interactive visual analysis for the field of flow simulation data. A young PhD student, Helmut Doleisch, took over the task of designing and developing the first version of a new technology framework which since then was known under the term "SimVis".

Since 2000 the team supporting and collaborating within the SimVis technology framework has steadily grown. This has led to widely visible successes. Some of the highlights include:

  • More than 30 publications about new technological concepts or collaborative application successes with SimVis, which have been cited altogether more than 300 times by now
  • Winning the 1st Visualization Contest at the IEEE Visualization Conference 2004 in Austin, Texas, USA
  • Best Paper Award at the SimVis 2005 Conference in Magdeburg, Germany
  • Collaboration with top researchers in the field of visualization around the world

The SimVis technology was successfully employed in such diverse application areas as climate research and severe weather forcasting, combustion and exhaust simulation in the automotive field, aerodynamics for cars, airplanes and sport applications, climate control systems, blood and airflow in the human body in medical applications, seismic data analysis, and many more.

In 2008, the Spin-Off company SimVis GmbH was founded. The task: further development of the technology as well as the distribution of the commercial software system SimVis(TM).

Today, the next version of SimVis is about to be released within the coming weeks, and further research and development is carried out in close collaboration with our international research partners.

We are looking forward to continuing our successful work but also plan to extend our portfolio in a technological as well as application-oriented sense.
